THIS EXPANSIVE SKYLINE MIKE LUCK - CITYSCAPE

Cityscape is the first mini-album from self-proclaimed studiofreak Mike Luck, a DJ and producer hailing from Utrecht, Netherlands. A quick visit to his Soundcloud page reveals an assuredly talented producer that borrows as he pleases from a myriad of genres. Elements of disco, house, dub, indie and more are all present in Luck's own particular take on electronica, giving his output a decidedly West Coast vibe whilst retaining a foundation of European house sensibilities. If Cityscape is the album's title, then trying to guess which city he conveys best is definitely part of the fun.

Mike Luck's previous releases include a deftly progressive, string-soaked remix of Monarchy track Disintegration featuring burlesque icon Dita Von Teese and productions for Berlin's Thomas Azier and Dutch rap/funk outfit Chef'Special. He also kicked out a cracking remix of How We Dance by Most Unpleasant Men in the not too distant past.

That he cut his teeth at French label Kitsuné and Belgium's Eskimo Recordings should come as no surprise to anyone with even a passing knowledge of these labels. Both have a reputation for nurturing quirky, cutting-edge electronica. But with the weight of Be Yourself Music behind Cityscape comes the opportunity for Mike Luck to solidify his already burgeoning reputation and move forward into the next phase of his musical career.

Cityscape is a boundless mini-album, packed with dreamy, spacious electronica that simultaneously relaxes and energises. It synthesises perfectly, from the subtle dub grooves of Mind Traveller to the polytempic Phase Change. It's satisfyingly cohesive, using warm bass and synth drones to ground each track to a central concept.

The title track includes a spectacular animated music video made by Maxmana, member of Amsterdam based interactive art collective Zesbaans. You can watch the video on YouTube and Vimeo.

Future plans for Mike Luck include a foray into the world of music production for games and movies and the production of a compelling live show. If Cityscape is your introduction into Mike Luck's musical landscape, expect to be travelling alongside this fresh talent on an exciting trajectory this year.

Mike Luck - Cityscape is out from today on Be Yourself Music and available via Beatport, iTunes, Traxsource, Deezer and all other online music retailers.

VATOGONZALEZ.COM COMMUNITY PRESENTS - ARMY OF BASTARDS MIXTAPE 2

ARMY OF BASTARDS KEEPS MARCHING ON
Online community ‘VATOGONZALEZ.COM’ launches second edition of ‘Army of Bastards’ mixtape

In 2012, online community VATOGONZALEZ.COM made headlines when they unleashed the first ‘user-generated’ mixtape, ‘Army of Bastards’. The mixtape introduced you to talents like Martin Garrix and Olivier Heldens, amongst others, who since the release of the mixtape have put out records on labels such as Musical Freedom, Spinnin’, and DOORN. The 6000+ active members community, which also counts renowned DJ’s like Hardwell, Nicky Romero and Quintino amongst its members, now takes the stage with the second edition of the ‘Army of Bastards’ mixtape series, which will be released Wednesday April 24 at 4pm (CET) as free download at VATOGONZALEZ.COM and will once again, consist strictly of productions by the members of the online community. Vato Gonzalez, also known as the ‘Dirty House Bastard’, artist/producer of UK Top 10 hit ‘Badman Riddim’ and UK Top 20 hit ‘Not a Saint’, and moderator of the community, selected the freshest cuts from over 150 submissions and put them together in the ‘Army of Bastards 2’ mixtape.

Vato Gonzalez about the new mixtape: “The Army of Bastards is movement that goes beyond the support I'd like to give to the next generation of artists. It's truly an army of people who are as passionate about music as I am. As a collective we look out for our own, not only when it comes to producing, but also in matters of music theft or the exploitation of new talent by the profiteering gluttons of this industry. We do not take such matters lightly. Any artist can tell you how hard it is to come up in this business when you are on your own, that is why we've joined forces and found strength in numbers. It's easy to mess with one bastard, but not with a whole army of us. Anybody who shares our passion for producing EDM is most welcome amidst us, regardless if they are headlining on major festivals or producing in a basement. I'm very proud at The Army of Bastards as a collective, not only because they are an incredibly talented bunch but also because they truly stand up for each other.”

To support the launch of the mixtape, Vato Gonzalez produced the opening track ‘Strength in Numbers’, which serves as the mixtape’s anthem and will be released shortly. Vato Gonzalez: “With this mixtape series, I try to encourage young producers (of any genre) that there’s a lot you can do yourself without the help/support of the industry, from production to distribution. Don’t get discouraged, you’re not alone in your struggle to find your way to the top. Look around you and assemble! Therefore, ‘Strength in Numbers’ has become the anthem of this mixtape.”

TINLICKER - REMEMBER THE FUTURE ALBUM RELEASE

Tinlicker, otherwise known as Black Sun Empire's Micha Heyboer, returns today with his first full-length solo album, Remember The Future.

Released on Zero Three Zero, it's a huge release, with 22 tracks plus two bonus cuts. It's My First Time Here, released for free in December 2012, was the world's first introduction to Micha Heyboer outside of his established DnB outfit, Black Sun Empire. Made up of Heyboer, his brother Milan and high school friend Rene Verdult, BSE are established purveyors of darkstep-fuelled drum n bass with five albums under their belts and a committed worldwide fanbase. Tinlicker's sound is an exciting departure, but not a shocking one given Micha's eclectic influences, from Paul Kalkbrenner and Trentemoller to Radiohead and Patrick Watson.

Tinlicker's eclecticism shines through on Remember The Future. He shows his pop chops on Empty Skies, featuring soulful vocalist Tessa Rose Jackson, and an appreciation for acid techno on tracks like Drive Me Crazy and Let The Windows Open. From poptronica to progressive house and even a nod to 80s synthpop (on We Are Young ft. Morgan Jones) this album is a mixed bag of tricks to say the least, a real portfolio piece that shows his full capabilities as a producer outside of the DnB sphere.

But it still retains something that is very specifically Tinlicker. Not so much a sound, although the dual threads of progressive and techno are certainly there. More like an ongoing theme, not easily quantifiable but present nonetheless. From the artwork inspired by Ted Hughes' Iron Man to the child-like wonderment evoked with song titles like Milkshake and Cupcakes, Applejuice and Octopus Tree, the album is strangely reminiscent of Craig Raine's 1979 poem A Martian Sends A Postcard Home, which describes everyday objects through the eyes of a being seeing them for the first time. The title, Remember The Future, sums it up neatly.

Tinlicker - Remember The Future is out from today on Zero Three Zero and available via Beatport, iTunes and all other online music retailers.

Out Now! Fraulein Z and Axel E Rator - Christiane F

"Christiane F" is a new techno-electro track produced by Fraulein Z and Axel E Rator! This dark & powerful electro-techno track is a real underground dance floor killer! The track is enthusiastically received and already played for thousands of clubbers internationally. For example at the ELECTRODE 2012 Festival ( Rome, Italy), Dance Valley (Amsterdam, NL) and Herr Zimmerman parties in Factory 010 (Rotterdam, NL).

This underground track is inspired on "Christiane F", Berlin's most famous drug addict. After the initial success of the book in 1981, her story was made into a film. The title in German language was 'Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo', and in English, 'Christiane F'. So Axel E Rator and Fraulein Z dedicate this song to Christiane F.

Remixes are in hands by: D-R-U-N-K (Motor) and Audiowitch.
Fraulein Z and Axel E Rator - "Christiane F" is out from today on Herr Zimmerman and available via Beatport and all other online music retailers.

Exclusive interview with Diego Levatto

Diego Levatto is a DJ/Producer from LA. Signed to Dynamix Recordingz, Diego travels across the USA regularly, as well as jet setting to the far corners of the earth, firmly stamping his funky beat on his fans far & wide.

Check out his latest track, Big Guns Anthem ( Feat MC I See ) out now on Beatport.

  • Can you remember your first memory of music, and how did it make you feel?
DL: I remember the only thing I could think was doing this forever... The fact that I had the potential to impact people with a number of ways using music was a major in my book. It made me realize what music meant to me. It made me feel like I could do anything. It was and is still my first love.
  • Who has been your biggest inspiration through your life?
DL: My daughter is my biggest inspiration. She is my drive and before her... I was mainly focused on music which was my only drive... In present day... The music, the EDM scene and the passion I have for the crowd is my drive. But my daughter is my life entirely. Together those two move me in a way beyond reason. I love the music and I love the ppl who make this all worth doing.
  • You have experienced playing to large crowds of people at venues like Ultra. How does that compare to playing a smaller venue, and do you prefer the intimacy of a club or the massive buzz of connecting to the masses?
DL: To me playing big cities, large stages and pool parties is the best. Them Festivals mean the world. But they are the best because I also had my share of gigs on a lower level. I learned to respect all masses... From playing to 5 ppl to 5000 ppl... Its all about the music and the passion. In my early days - some sets weren't the most fulfilling but I enjoyed it anyway. Music is my life. I live for it. But definitely love intimacy too. It's a great way and very rewarding to be in this place after all the work I've put into it. So intimacy and large venues are all the same when a DJs heart is in the right place. It's nice to be part of the EDM breeding ground worldwide. I'm not one to turn down a gig. Size doesn't matter. Music is the passion and at the end of the night, its all about doing something bigger than yourself.
  • How would you best describe your life, in one word answers, starting with the most rewarding? ie: happy, crazy, fulfilled etc.
DL: Growing, Peaceful, busy, accomplished, loved, outgoing, Happy and extremely Thankful.
  • You have recently played to a UK audience down in our Capital city. How well were you received, and how different are the British clubbers to the US ones?
DL: I felt at home but felt a need to prove myself. I was far from home and far from my usual sets.
The British are very different in the sense that they expect a higher caliber of music considering that UK is a breeding ground for EDM.
At first I didn't look ready according to the Club Promoters, but when I got on, I got right to business. They were very supportive and opened. In the US the music in the smaller cities is a little bit more throw back. But in the US I get to play a lot of International numbers in the bigger city spots. So needless to say, playing a venue in the UK was not a problem. I'm one of the few in the US who plays a lot of UK hits and breaks new charts as opposed to those who stick to the Top 40 stuff ppl listen to over and over. In the UK, music selection is everything and the first few records can make you or break you. So being selective and being myself really helped. I'm naturally a rather energetic individual, so the UK crowd is one I enjoy very much.
  • What can we expect to hear from Diego Levatto in the next 12 months...any exciting news you can share with us?
DL: I got a few new records in the works with El Setos, some Europe touring I'm working on and definitely planning a new tour through Holland, Rotterdam, And The Netherlands very own... Amsterdam Redlight district. Plus I'll be dropping some more tracks with MC I See of Holland. With all the Beatport releases in store... You can expect to see me in your city soon.
  • And finally, if you could advise a newcomer to the business with one piece of wisdom, what would that be?
DL: It's very important to do something original. Practice, pick a style that works for you, then dominate it. Most importantly take your time, learn your craft, respect it, respect others, and follow your heart. But you must get ready because there's more to it than getting on stage, raging and twisting knobs. Learn your music, be selective, set a goal... Accomplish it, then raise the bar with a bigger goal. But don't forget to focus on that goal. Don't run too fast. Take each step, master it, then move forward. My best piece of advice is to just practice a lot and make sure you are on point. Take your time and enjoy it. Without passion and dedication... It's all for nothing.

Editors note: Thank you so much Diego for that fascinating insight to your life. Good luck with everything that you do, and hope to see you very soon.

KRAM RECORDS - DROPIT (VOL. 1) EP

Kram Records continues to carve an aggressive niche in the techno landscape with the release of an inspired new EP called DropIt (Vol. 1). The showcase record features an international cohort of artists hand-picked by label founder Kramnik: Buru, Paul Bart, Bart Stellingwerf & Discmode, Soundprism and Oliver Gross.

The process, says Kramnik, was incredibly collaborative and rewarding. After reaching out to the community on Twitter and Facebook to ask for demos, he was happy to discover some great raw talent amongst his fans.

"It's been very interesting because I've provided them with feedback towards the final master," he said. "I would comment on the bass, or a synth, for example, and then they would send it back." The result is a six-track EP that is surely helping to breed the next generation of talented techno producers. Not only that, it is a direct and deliberate cultivation of the Kram Records sound - intelligent techno with a focus on selective sampling and a dark, subterranean vibe.

DropIt (Vol. 1) is the first in an ongoing series of EPs that showcases the work of fresh and exciting artists and sets up those selected to remix future Kramnik productions. Previous Kramnik releases have been reworked at the hands of big names such as Ben Sims, Gabriel Ananda, Hernan Cattaneo, Timo Maas and Nick Warren, with more big names slated to take on the challenge this year. However, the producer is excited to turn his tunes over to some fresh blood.

As well as the upcoming EP release, Kramnik's "Dark Matters" album continues to make waves with music fans and press alike, with Future Music selecting it as their Album of the Month in December and giving it a 9/10 rating.

" one of the most distinctive and original albums of the year, with a unique and unaffected sound, discovering and exploring new and uncharted territory," they said.

"Dark Matters" is a highly atmospheric record that bristles with energy, tension and brooding darkness. It builds with a subtle drive that takes the listener from expansive, eerie sound textures to slabs of bassdriven, tough tech...A truly singular artist, clearly more interested in his output than the fame it could yield, Kramnik could well be bending our minds for years and decades to come."

Kramnik has also been featured in Ibiza Voice, Data Transmission, They Make Music, The Sun, Inhale, BigShot, My Beat Fix, Defected, DSI, Music Radar, DMC, and many more. With Dark Matters igniting like a comet and this latest exciting release, it's bound to be another exciting year for Kramnik and Kram Records. A techno juggernaut is in motion, and we wait patiently to see where it goes next.

DropIt (Vol. 1) is out from today on Kram Records and available at Beatport and all other online music retailers.

MINISTRY OF SOUND PRESENTS: DANNY AVILA LIVE

MINISTRY OF SOUND PRESENTS: DANNY AVILA LIVE
Album released April 7th 2013 on iTunes & Beatport

In a little over 12 months, Danny Avila has established himself as one of the biggest contenders in dance music’s prolific pool of next generation talent. Over 200 shows worldwide, releases on Big Beat Records and Interscope Records, support from some of the biggest players in the music industry including Billboard Magazine, MTV and Dancing Astronaut, a prime time residency on US super-broadcaster SiriusXM and his recent Generation Wild Tour across the eastern US and Canadian continent, among other highlights, have all seen him enjoy a meteoric and hard-earned rise to prominence.

It is Avila’s DJ sets, however, that have set him apart from the competition. His track selection, which beggars belief considering his mere 18 years of age, has repeatedly left onlookers floored and clubbers jumping, throbbing and bursting past breaking point. Bristling with innate creativity, his mixes explode with energy and carry an originality and understanding of the dynamics of the dance floor that belies his years. Danny Avila does not just want you to fist pump your arms at him in admiration – he wants you to get off your mother-f*cking ass and dance.

GET A TASTE OF THE ALBUM WITH THIS EXCLUSIVE MINIMIX

To celebrate Avila’s undeniable talent, on April 7th 2013 Ministry of Sound Records, one of the planet’s largest and most acclaimed imprints, will release ‘Danny Avila Live’, a scorching 24-track compilation that features the biggest hits currently flying out of Avila’s sets. From start to finish this is Avila in his absolute element, letting his imagination fly across the 1 hour 12 minute mix as he blends electro, dubstep, drum & bass, progressive and trap.

“For me, (this mix) is really, really special,” said Avila, currently on tour in the States. “Ministry of Sound is one of the biggest brands in dance music history and I’ve always loved it. Not only because of the label, but also the club and all the people involved with it. It’s such an honour for me that Ministry asked me to do this compilation.”

Recorded in the heat of Miami during Music Week and Ultra Music Festival, Avila found the energy of the nine-day electronic music extravaganza highly conducive. “It’s one of my favourite cities in the world,” he added, “and it was in the middle of the music conference so I had a lot of inspiration!”

Dropping tracks from the likes of Knife Party (‘Rage Valley’, ‘Go Deep’), Swanky Tunes (‘Bloody Rush’), Digitalism (‘Zdarlight’ Fedde Le Grand & Deniz Koyu Remix), Paris & Simo (‘Aztec’ Ansol Remix), Doctor P (‘Flying Spaghetti Monster’), Zedd (Spektrum Deniz Koyu Remix), Marco V & Jochen Miller (BASH!!) and more, plus his own production ‘Breaking Your Fall’, ‘Ministry of Sound Presents: Danny Avila Live’ is a startlingly diverse and dynamic mix that manages to somehow encapsulate this incredible young talent and the music represented by one of the most acclaimed dance clubs in the world.

Danny Avila will be headlining Ministry of Sound London on Saturday April 6th, before flying back to the US to perform at Coachella Festival. ‘Ministry of Sound Presents: Danny Avila Live’ is released on iTunes and www.beatport.com on Sunday April 7th 2013.
